Cancel Culture Cancels Democrats

Vernon Jones | Yahoo! News

In the ongoing demand for cancel culture, the Democrat party itself wound up on the list of entities to be either renamed or removed.

Democrat Rep. Vernon Jones recently criticized his own political party for “unlawfully tearing down statues and removing monuments and changing the name of streets and buildings because they feel it’s associated with racism, bigotry, and the Confederacy.” He then asked a very important question, “Wasn’t it Democrats who opposed the freedom of slavery and wanted to keep slaves? Wasn’t it the Democrats who started the Ku Klux Klan?”

The Democrat Representative previously stated he would be voting for Donald Trump in the upcoming election, praising his “handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges, and his criminal justice initiatives”. Rep. Jones is also one of the many black Americans part of the #Blexit movement (“black exit”).

Following his endorsement of President Trump, Rep. Jones was heavily criticized by his party, with Democrat Sen. Nikema Williams stating, “Vernon Jones is an embarrassment to the Democratic Party and does not stand for our values.”

Additionally, Rep. Vernon Jones has previously expressed his disapproval of Joe Biden:

Where [was] Joe Biden and the previous administration for 8 years in the White House on this issue? I’ll tell you. They were absent in unifying this country. The black unemployment rate under Biden and the Obama administration averaged a horrific 12.8 percent. The number of black Americans in poverty barely fell during the Obama administration, going down by just 145,000 over eight years. By comparison, more than double that number — 350,000 black Americans — were lifted out of poverty during just the first two years of the Trump administration.

The country has suffered much destruction and anarchy since the death of George Floyd. Statues have been vandalized or demolished, shops have been looted and burned, and popular brands have been rebranded. Rep. Jones has applied the same cancel culture logic to the Democrat party itself, by accusing them as the sole culprit behind the nation’s dark past. He argues that if we are to erase entities that have committed humanitarian crimes, the Democrat party itself must be removed from America.

Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert recently introduced a House Resolution that demands the Democrat party change its name by explaining it is "the standard to which they are holding everyone else." This follows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's recent order for the removal of four portraits of former Speakers who served the Confederacy, of which all four were Democrats. The GOP is now attempting to show that cancel culture works both ways, with Rep. Gohmert stating:

A great portion of the history of the Democratic Party is filled with racism and hatred. Since people are demanding we rid ourselves of the entities, symbols, and reminders of the repugnant aspects of our past, then the time has come for Democrats to acknowledge their party's loathsome and bigoted past, and consider changing their party name to something that isn't so blatantly and offensively tied to slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, and the Ku Klux Klan.
